Our Story
You've read about our boutique approach, our marketing philosophy, and even heard from a few agents. But do you do really know our story from all the way back in 1943 and how we got here today? What about how Betsy Atkinson came into the business? It's all here waiting for you.
01
1943: How hard could it be to sell an oceanfront lot in Virginia Beach for $2,000?
In 1943, not so easy. America was still fighting a two-front war, and luxury, oceanfront real estate wasn’t top of mind. The future was uncertain, and buyers’ confidence wasn’t high. That didn’t deter Frank Atkinson. He opened Atkinson Realty. His office on 54th Street had no heat, air conditioning, or bathroom. What Frank lacked in office amenities, he made up for with a strong work ethic and a natural ability to sell. Soon, everyone knew Frank Atkinson and Atkinson Realty.

1980s: “I need you to stop in and say hi to some people.”
Fast forward a few years, Frank Atkinson Real Estate was a thriving local institution. His son, John Atkinson, was overseeing the business. John then decided to run for City Treasurer and won. He asked his wife, Betsy Atkinson, for help running the daily operations. One fateful day, some clients came in unhappy with a rental property. Betsy called John, asking for help in what to do. Like Frank Atkinson, unwilling to let an unfavorable situation get the best of her, she brushed her shoulders off and introduced herself, “Hi, I’m Betsy Atkinson. What can I do to help you?” From there, it was Betsy’s show. She obtained her broker’s license, changed the company name to Atkinson Realty, grew the footprint to three offices, and expanded into residential real estate.

2020s: “It’s just a pandemic. Time for you to start running things.”
As if emerging technologies, new competition, and the ever-evolving need to create high-quality and unique collateral weren’t enough, add in a global pandemic. At the same time, Atkinson Realty navigated the transition of Betsy’s daughter, Page Miyares, who became the Principal Broker. As Page has settled into her role, she, like her predecessors, has continued to grow the brokerage, bringing on fresh talent and opening new offices. Over the years, the Atkinson family has helped guide the company and clients through changes in the real estate industry, buyer’s markets, seller’s markets, and new disruptive technologies. With each generation and each challenge, Frank Atkinson’s relationship-driven approach to sales has been at the core of Atkinson Realty.
